Choosing a PFAS technology.

Use the same evaluation questions across suppliers. The correct approach depends on media, concentration, PFAS profile, volume, discharge limits and residual handling.

Concept illustration of laboratory analysis

Start with the problem definition

Before comparing vendor claims, document the actual water, soil, concentrate or spent-media matrix and the objective. Removal, immobilisation and chemical destruction are different outcomes.

Five questions to ask every supplier

  1. Matrix & target compounds. Which PFAS are present, what are the initial concentrations, and is short-chain behaviour relevant?
  2. Evidence maturity. Is the result from laboratory, pilot or full-scale operation? What independently reviewed measurements are available?
  3. Mass balance & residuals. Where does fluorine go? How are brines, resins, carbon, sludges, off-gases and by-products handled?
  4. Operational fit. What flow rate, water chemistry, energy, pretreatment, downtime and consumables are expected?
  5. Permit & compliance context. What treatment targets and sampling methods apply in the relevant jurisdiction?

High-level technology comparison

PathwayTypical purposeImportant qualification
Granular activated carbon (GAC)Adsorption / separationPerformance depends on PFAS properties, water chemistry and bed life; spent media needs management.
Ion exchangeSelective adsorption / separationResin selectivity, regeneration and spent-media disposal can dominate economics.
Nanofiltration / reverse osmosisMembrane separationConcentrate requires treatment or disposal; pressure and fouling matter.
SCWO and other destruction optionsChemical breakdown of PFAS in defined matricesReview verified products, fluoride balance, emissions and maturity; claims are not universal.
Soil washing / excavationReduce or manage PFAS in soilCreates secondary contaminated streams and site-specific constraints.

Minimum evidence for a directory entry

Public documentation of a PFAS-specific product, project or service; a reliable source URL; location and application where available; plus clear distinction between the supplier's claim and an independent result. Inclusion is not an endorsement.

Editorial principle: absence of data does not imply poor performance, and a supplier's marketing claim is not the same as independent validation.
